Radical solutions proposed to protect Perth’s groundwater in a warmer, drier climate

After a summer in which Perth recorded its driest six-month stretch since records began, revelations that the Coca-Cola company was extracting, free-of-charge, thousands of litres of water from a bore in Perth hills caused outrage.

Minister for Water Simone McGurk met with the company amid community fears that the extraction was unmonitored, and Coca-Cola agreed to temporarily pause extraction to allow aquifers to recharge — but the incident has intensified attention on how groundwater is managed. 

Speaking at an ABC Radio Perth panel discussion, Ms McGurk said: “One of the good things that’s come out of this awareness about Coca-Cola and other bottled water companies taking water from groundwater sources has been an awareness about how our water system works.”
