Program History

New WAter Ways was formed in 2006 to enable excellence in integrated water cycle management and build the water sensitive capacity of government and industry practitioners, with funding provided through the Coastal Catchments Initiative by the Australian Government, the former Department of Planning and Infrastructure, the Department of Water and the Western Australian Local Government Association.

New WAter Ways was incorporated in 2014 and the current agency partners were established as the New WAter Ways Board at its inaugural Annual General Meeting. This structure allows New WAter Ways Inc to better plan and manage delivery of the annual work program.

The annual work program seeks to address critical barriers to the creation of water senstive communities. This has seen the focus of the program change in response to key industry needs as follows.

  • 2006 – Water Resources State Planning Policy
  • 2008 – Better Urban Water Management
  • 2010 – advancing engineering knowledge
  • 2012 – advancing planning knowledge
  • 2014 – WSUD in shallow groundwater
  • 2016 – intra- and inter-agency capacity building
  • 2018 – demonstrations and risk
  • 2020 - maintenance
  • 2022 – site context and liveability

Our current work program aims to build awareness of how water sensitive urban design builds resilience to climate change and supports healthy communities through improved connections with nature. It will also continue to emphasise the importance of maintaining water sensitive assets and better management of sediment.
