Delivering water sensitive urban design in the Peel-Harvey: A collaborative pathway to healthier waterways and liveable communities

Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) is increasingly recognised as a critical approach to improving water quality, reducing flood impacts, enhancing biodiversity, and creating cooler, greener and more liveable communities. The Five Rivers NRM's WSUD resource hub has been developed to support the implementation of the Bindjareb Djilba Protection Plan by providing practical guidance, planning tools, policy resources, and local case studies that enable better urban development outcomes across the Peel-Harvey catchment.

This webinar will showcase the suite of WSUD resources available, including guidance on delivering WSUD principles in urban development, a model local planning policy, and examples of best-practice implementation in the Peel region. These resources are designed to support planners, developers, local governments, consultants and decision-makers in integrating water-sensitive outcomes into planning and development processes.

The session will highlight how Traditional Owner representatives, state government agencies, local governments, technical experts and regional stakeholders worked together to develop a shared vision for protecting the Peel-Harvey estuary while supporting sustainable growth. Speakers from the Bindjareb Djilba Policy and Planning Committee, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and the WSUD Technical Working Group will reflect on the collaborative partnership that underpinned the development of these resources.

SPP2.9 Water Training Sessions for practitioners

State Planning Policy 2.9 Water and the Planning for Water Guidelines

The review of the water policy suite has been successfully completed, and the revised State Planning Policy 2.9 Water (SPP 2.9) and the Planning for Water Guidelines were published on 16 December 2025 and were operational from 18 December 2025.

These new instruments replace the following policies and guidelines:

SPP 2.1 Peel-Harvey Coastal Plain Catchment
SPP 2.2 Gnangara Groundwater Protection
SPP 2.3 Jandakot Groundwater Protection
SPP 2.7 Public Drinking Water Source Policy
SPP 2.9 Water Resources
SPP 2.10 Swan-Canning River System
Policy measures that address flooding within SPP 3.4 Natural Hazards and Disasters
Government Sewerage Policy
Government Sewerage Policy Explanatory Guidelines
Better Urban Water Management

New WAter Ways WSUD Training Sessions

New WAter Ways has delivered a number of training sessions to build industry knowledge and optimise water sensitive urban design outcomes across our communities.

The series "Context is critical - using site context to guide WSUD solutions" is framed around site conditions that are representative of the landscapes of the Perth and Peel region. Additional sessions have also been developed to provide more detail around key areas of application.
