The Wharf Street Wetland and Civic Centre Parklands in Cannington, a collaboration between the Department of Parks and Wildlife and the City of Canning, intercept and treat stormwater from the Wharf Street main drain to improve water quality in the Canning River. With a focus on ecosystem health, stormwater reuse, flood control, and placemaking, the project enhances biodiversity, mitigates flooding, and fosters community engagement.
Despite challenges with material degradation and alkalinity levels, the wetland demonstrates significant nutrient removal, addressing 45% of phosphorus and 65% of nitrogen since commissioning. Other outcomes include stormwater reuse, ecosystem health improvements through native plantings, flood control measures, enhanced amenity and connectivity, and adaptation to climate change by reducing ambient temperatures. The project serves as a model for sustainable urban development, providing valuable insights into wetland performance and contributing to community well-being and environmental stewardship.
