Parkfield public open space in Bertram underwent a retrofit to address algal blooms, flooding, and groundwater issues. The design improved water quality and promoted biodiversity.

Scale: Commercial and Industrial lot
Development Type: Public open space, Retrofitting
Local Government: Town of Kwinana
WSUD Solution: Living streams, Retain native vegetation and natural landform, Swales/Buffer strips, Waterwise landscaping

Parkfield public open space in Bertram faced challenges including algal blooms, flooding, and groundwater issues. To address community concerns and environmental issues, the City of Kwinana partnered with TME consultants to retrofit the area. The retrofit design preserved the water body, incorporating a biofilter basin with native vegetation to treat stormwater and mitigate flooding.

A rocky channel was constructed to connect the stream to the lake, while a subsoil drainage system separated nutrient-rich groundwater from surface water. A smaller lake was created, maintained with low-nutrient groundwater and equipped with a pumping system to prevent algal blooms. The design also included active open space and habitat enhancements for fauna.

By managing stormwater and groundwater effectively, the retrofit improved water quality, reduced flooding, and maintained community-favoured water features. It also provided opportunities for recreation, enhanced visual amenity, and promoted biodiversity. The project demonstrates successful integration of water-sensitive design principles to address environmental and community concerns in public open spaces.
