The Liege Street Constructed Wetland aims to mitigate nutrient loading into the Canning River.

Scale: Precinct
Development Type: Retrofitting
Local Government: City of Canning
WSUD Solution: Constructed wetlands

The Liege Street Demonstration Constructed Wetland, developed in 2004 as part of the Drainage Nutrient Intervention Program, aimed to reduce nutrient loading into the Canning River. Situated in Cannington, the wetland retrofitted public space to improve stormwater quality from a 530 ha urban catchment before entering the river.

Despite being within a once degraded Bush Forever Site, the wetland garnered awards for excellence in stormwater management. Initial reports indicated success in meeting short-term targets for nutrient removal and reducing pollutants, while fostering diverse fauna habitat. However, recent declines in emergent macrophyte coverage suggest challenges with organic loading and insufficient aeration, impacting water quality treatment efficiency and ecology. Efforts are underway to address these issues, with plans to design inline and passive systems for better performance. Despite challenges, the wetland continues to provide recreational and educational benefits to the community.
