WSUD Solution: Infiltration basins and trenches, Litter and sediment traps and hydrocarbon management, Managed aquifer recharge, Non structural strategies - maintenance, education and participation programs
Town of Cottesloe initiated the Aquifer Recharge project with federal support to combat decreased rainfall and groundwater availability. Covering 4 km2, it aims to improve groundwater quality and mitigate saltwater intrusion by managing pollutants with underground sumps and stormwater pits. The project also educates the community on water conservation and efficient technologies.
180 ML per year of untreated stormwater previously discharged into ocean outfalls is now redirected for aquifer recharge, reducing discharge during minor events. The “Think Water” education program successfully raised awareness, offering resources like brochures, magnets, and native plant subsidies to promote water-wise gardening.
By closing and potentially reopening ocean outfalls during extreme rainfall, the project mitigates risks of aquifer collapse and saltwater intrusion. Overall, it enhances groundwater management and fosters community engagement in sustainable water practices, ensuring the long-term viability of water resources in the region.
