Scale: Street
Development Type: Public open space
Local Government: City of Joondalup
WSUD Solution: Water efficiency programs, Waterwise landscaping
Perth’s water scarcity necessitates water-efficient landscaping, exemplified by the City of Joondalup’s waterwise demonstration garden in Ocean Reef’s Carina Loop. Replacing thirsty exotic plants with over 1,000 locally native species, including 4 native trees, the project reduces water usage while enhancing biodiversity and aesthetics.
Signage educates residents about waterwise practices, encouraging adoption in home gardens. The garden’s design meets community needs while mitigating urban heat island effects and providing habitat for wildlife. Maintenance is minimal, with little watering or pruning required.
This project demonstrates the City’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement. Through initiatives like the Waterwise Verge Rebate Program and workshops, residents are empowered to create their own waterwise gardens, contributing to a greener, cooler, and more resilient urban environment.
