Maintenance means taking an established and relatively well functioning WSUD asset in a fully developed catchment and undertaking the necessary actions to ensure that it continues to function effectively to achieve its design objectives.

Maintenance does not mean:

  • Fixing poorly performing assets
  • Undertaking works on systems that have been built before the catchment is fully developed
  • Actions to ensure effective establishment

Maintenance is required to ensure systems will function effectively, prolonging their life span. Maintenance also ensures that the multiple objectives of WSUD systems, which include environmental protection, flood protection and amenity, can be delivered.

Effective maintenance requires time and resources to be provided to proactively inspect and program activities and fix small problems before they become big problems.
