WA: Developing a Public Open Space Strategy

  • This event has passed.

Venue

Town of Cambridge

Public parkland for sport, recreation and leisure functions, social gatherings, entertainment and tourism plays a vital role in community health and well being and the prevention of chronic disease. Now that all local governments are required to develop local public health plans, it follows that a strategy for public open space is also required. The World Health Organisation social determinants of public health places local governments at the forefront of the management of natural and built environments, ecosystems and activities that improve our surroundings and increase community participation in physical activity and social connection. Direction on the enhancement and management of open space also contributes to achieving strategic community goals, communicates community values and ensures appropriate environments to meet recreational, health and social needs. If your local government has not developed its Public Open Space Strategy and you do not have dedicated an officer to write one, we invite you and your team to register for this workshop. You will come away with a thorough understanding of the Department of Sport and Recreations POS Strategy Guide for Local Government, an understanding of your obligations under legislation, learn from the experiences of others and have prepared an action plan.
