| Stormwater harvesting presents opportunities to support urban greening, improve water security and advance total water cycle management. However, many local governments face challenges in understanding the performance of existing assets, identifying future opportunities, and planning for stormwater as a long-term water resource.
This presentation follows the City of Stirling’s journey from assessing stormwater harvesting opportunities across the municipality, to establishing a storm water quality monitoring program and reviewing legacy stormwater harvesting assets. Through this work, treatment solutions were implemented to enhance existing schemes and align them with contemporary guidance and risk-based management approaches. The project also prompted broader consideration of how stormwater is understood, managed and strategically planned for as an urban water resource.
Practical lessons will be shared for local government and water sector practitioners seeking to improve the understanding, management and long-term planning of stormwater harvesting systems to advance sustainable urban water outcomes.
