The Swan River is a Perth icon and provides significant economic, cultural and social benefits to our community. However, it also poses a risk of flooding to the surrounding floodplain, including built-up commercial and residential areas. This presentation will use the recent flood study for the Swan River to give context to a discussion of good practice in contemporary floodplain management.

The presentation will provide a brief history of floodplain management in WA and a framework for on-going flood risk management. Topics discussed will include: roles and responsibilities in flood risk management, data collection and analyses, flood mapping, interaction of coastal and river flooding, potential climate change impacts, flood hazard, emergency management and response, land use planning and structural mitigation works.

Speaker

Simon Rodgers leads a small team of engineers and floodplain managers at the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. He has over 20 years of experience in flood hydrology, hydraulic modelling and floodplain management. The group provides information and technical advice supporting land use planning, flood warning and emergency response planning.
