Explore the Preston River through the eyes of the world’s oldest living culture.
Led by local Noongar Karim Khan, experience the profound connection between the land and its traditional custodians on an immersive cultural walking tour along the Preston River Foreshore.
Karim Khan, who has connections to country in Donnybrook, Collie, Busselton, and Bunbury regions of the South-West, offers a unique perspective as he shares stories of traditional Noongar customs, including the significance of the Preston River, bushfoods, traditional medicines, spiritual practices and more.
Karim has many years of experience working for the Department of Parks and Wildlife, as a seasonal firefighter, conservation employee, Aboriginal training supervisor, and project officer with South West Native Title, and has made significant contribution to increasing understanding of Noongar culture and how people live with their country, ensuring all Aboriginal interests are considered in relation to Parks and Wildlife legislation and policies. As part of the Southwest Native Title Settlement, Karim now continues his contributions as the Land and Heritage Manager at Gnaala Karla Booja Aboriginal Corporation.
The Preston River foreshore revitalisation project, now in its fourth year, has focused on fostering community involvement in conservation activities including revegetation, managing invasive species and creating habitat for native wildlife along the river. This cultural walk provides a unique opportunity to explore the cultural heritage of the Noongar people in the serene setting of the Preston River Foreshore revegetation site.
Watch, listen and learn while taking in the beautiful sights of the bushland and river. The walking tour culminates in a yarning circle, providing an intimate setting for further discussion and reflection, followed by a shared morning tea. Dietary requirements can be accommodated with prior notice.
