With development in established areas becoming more commonplace, impacts on local communities are being mitigated through the embedding of community benefits that address local needs and aspirations. However, this can be a complex and subjective process with perspectives often differing between governments, developers and communities. The challenge comes in balancing these interests to identify the highest priority needs, and which solutions can be delivered that are valuable, commercially feasible and sustainable in the long term.

Course Presenters:
Ben Kent – Principal, Place
Working at the nexus of planning, design, place and engagement, Ben is well-versed at identifying and delivering community benefits. Through conducting social research, stakeholder engagement and place planning, Ben has delivered numerous community needs assessments and community benefit strategies for local governments and developers alike. These provide a strong evidence base for approvals bodies to use when making decisions, and give residents confidence that future developments will be well-used and become a positive part of the local community.
Kim Drubbel – Principal, Economics
Kim is an accomplished property economist with 16 years of global real estate and management consulting experience. Kim brings economic rigour and international insights to this topic, with an ability to determine which community benefits are likely to be successful and add most value to a place’s overall vibrancy. In addition to finely honed financial and analytical skills, Kim bridges the gap between disciplines by aligning creative and technical expertise, and ensuring that projects respond to the market, attract financing, and are ultimately implemented.
Kate Bainbridge – Senior Consultant, Planning
Kate’s experience working in local government and private industry has given her a thorough understanding of the importance of having a robust planning framework for governments and developers alike to rely on when making decisions. With greater emphasis being placed on good design rather than compliance with the R-Codes, developers are seeking to push the envelope in terms of plot ratio and building height but are willing to do so with certain trade-offs, provided expectations are clear and reasonable. Kate sees that local governments have a unique opportunity to deliver tangible benefits to their communities as a result – with the appropriate planning frameworks being in place.
