Guest speaker: Sally Thompson

Sally graduated from UWA with a double degree in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Chemistry. She worked as a consultant (at what was then SKM) in Perth for three years before moving to the USA to complete her PhD in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, supported by a General Sir John Monash Fellowship. Sally became an Assistant Professor of Surface Hydrology in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2012, where she achieved tenure and was awarded the Claire and Hsieh-Wen Shen Distinguished Research Chair, before upping stumps and returning home to Perth, to commence work at UWA  in 2019.

Sally will be talking about working together — engagement between industry and academia. Collaboration between engineering practitioners and university researchers can create exciting opportunities, like access to new forms of funding, the potential to unlock new ideas & solutions and opportunities to create new knowledge in otherwise “unloved” areas. However, the different cultures of academia and industry also lead to a broad range of potential pitfalls that both parties need to negotiate. So, could a new friend at a university represent a match made in heaven – or would it be closer to a match made on one some awful reality tv show?

Join us for a (lighthearted) chat about the different ways that industry and academia can engage with each other and some of those awkward relationship conversations that might need to happen along the way…
